It's that time of year again, my fellow crafty creators. The holidays are upon us and before we know it, they will be gone and it will be a brand new year. Most everyone's lives turns into a mad dash during hectic holiday events, shopping and photo sessions. When you are a handmade entrepreneur, however, your schedule gets amped and cramped with the additional needs to accommodate sales, marketing with #holiday #hashtags, special holiday shows and last minute custom orders.
As a full-time crafty creative, people may believe that I sit around in my jammies playing with beads and glitter all day. Although an appealing notion, that is simply not the case. As a small business owner in the arts and crafts field, my work day usually expands well past the standard 8am - 5pm/ 5 day work week. Much of my time is spent marketing my products and services, taking stock of my inventory, teaching classes and researching my art form. Here are some tips that I have found helpful during the holiday rush as a handmade jewelry designer and teaching artist:
1) Pre-schedule and register for annual holiday events
2) Utilize a yearly calendar and block out certain weeks leading up to holiday shows
3) Hire part-time help for tasks that can be easily delegated, such as mass mailing post cards, creating flyers, delivering brochures or restocking your inventory at local boutiques
4) Automate social media & include holiday themed posts
5) Reconfigure some of your older product listings to fit the holidays that make sense
